General Information on Accompanying a Patient
Family members and loved ones are encouraged to review the Massachusetts General Hospital visitor policy before coming to the hospital.
Patients Going Home on the Day of Surgery
Family members and loved ones are welcome to remain in the Center for Perioperative Care (CPC) waiting room for patients who are expected to go home on the day of surgery.
There is a wall-mounted digital communication board that provides real-time updates on a patient’s progress. This color-coded board protects the patient’s privacy yet allows family and loved ones to see when the patient enters and leaves the operating room.
Our surgical liaison is available to answer any questions and provide updates as you wait.
Patients Staying in the Hospital
Family members and loved ones may wait in the Yawkey Family Waiting Area for patients who will remain in the hospital after surgery. A hospital volunteer is available to answer any questions and will keep you informed.
After 7:30 pm, our volunteers will escort waiting family members to the Blum Center located on the first floor of the White building, room 110.
Filling your Prescriptions
Your surgeon may provide you with a prescription(s) after your surgery and will send it electronically to your home pharmacy.
Going Home
Once it is safe for you to leave the hospital, your nurse will review your home instructions and answer your questions, as well as call your family member or loved one to pick you up. Once they arrive, a member of the CPC team will assist you into the car.
Amenities
Coffee Central is located on the main floor and is open 24 hours, seven days a week.
The Riverside Café is located directly below the Yawkey Family Waiting Area and is open 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
Lodging Options for Family Members
The Liberty Hotel and the Wyndham Boston Beacon Hill are close to the hospital for family members who would like to stay nearby. For additional hotel listings, please see our full overnight accommodations list.
Spiritual Services
There is a chapel on the first floor of the Ellison building and a Masjid on the first floor of the Austen building at Mass General. Both are available to all denominations.
