Massachusetts General Hospital to advise Jiahui Health Network in creation of Jiahui International Hospital in Shanghai, China

Strategic collaboration to focus on key infrastructure, clinical objectives

BOSTON – Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General) and Jiahui Health Network (JHN) announced today a strategic collaboration in the creation of Jiahui International Hospital (JIH) in China’s Shanghai Province. Slated to open in October 2017, the 300-bed hospital will initially focus on cancer care and research before broadening its mission to care for patients across a wide spectrum of illness and disease. As part of the agreement, Mass General will provide strategic guidance in physical infrastructure, operations and governance as well as expertise in key clinical areas including nursing, patient care services and cancer care.

“We look forward to continuing our close relationship with Jiahui Health Network leaders as they work to launch this new facility and provide the very best patient care to the people of Shanghai and beyond,” says Peter L. Slavin, MD,  Mass General president. “As an academic medical center we relish the opportunity to share our experience gleaned from more than two centuries of providing top-notch patient care and leading-edge research.  We are proud to partner with Jiahui in developing innovative care models for China. This relationship also affords us new learning to apply to our work in Massachusetts.”

“As a healthcare service institute rooted in China, Jiahui Health is devoted to providing higher quality health care and delivering a suite of wide-ranging services from specialist healthcare to health management,” David Cook, MD, chief clinical and operations officer of Jiahui Health and president of Jiahui International Hospital. “Through this strategic collaboration with Mass General, we are bringing the concept of a world-class patient-centered and top quality healthcare to China via high technology, superior operations management, talent cultivation, and top patient care at our hospital. The goal is to highlight to the government, industry, patients, and the public that this concept can bring forth high quality, easy access and transparent costs.”

As part of the collaboration, the Mass General Cancer Center will advise Jiahui as it launches a cancer care center focused on breast, lung, gastrointestinal, lymphoma and myeloma treatment programs. In addition, Mass General’s Nursing and Patient Care Services will collaborate with Jiahui to create robust programs and establish the backbone for superior patient care through training, educational programs, and critical quality and safety initiatives. Future initiatives may focus on a remote second opinions program administered by Mass General physicians based in the United States.

This agreement is the result of a relationship which began in 2012 and included clinical and operational learning opportunities and workshops both in the United States and China. In addition, Mass General experts helped guide Jiahui in the space planning and architectural design of the hospital.
