About Steven Makovitch, DO
Dr. Makovitch is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician who specializes in the management of nonoperative sports related injuries. He works closely with patients to help them achieve their functional goals and return to sport and exercise.
Following his undergraduate training at Penn State University, Dr. Makovitch completed medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then pursued a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. Following residency, he completed additional training in sports medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT where he gained wide experience treating high level athletes to weekend warriors.
Dr. Makovitch's interest in sports medicine long outdates his medical training and started with the personal experience of many injuries while competing in gymnastics. Through his years of sports participation and injuries he gained a deep appreciation for the musculoskeletal system. Given his background, he has a keen interest in care of the gymnast.
Dr. Makovitch utilizes many tools to facilitate recovery and return to sport and activity. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is frequently used to help provide diagnosis and treatment including ultrasound guided injections. Fluoroscopically guided spine injections are also performed when necessary. Regenerative medicine is another area of interest to help facilitate healing and return to activity including platelet rich plasma injections and shockwave therapy. He also uses a minimally invasive outpatient procedure to treat refractory tendinitis such as tennis elbow. The technology helps tendon pain by precisely targeting and removing damaged tissue without the need for conventional surgery. Hands on treatment with osteopathic manipulative treatment is another tool to help recover and get back to exercise and sport.
He is currently a clinical instructor in the department of PM&R at Harvard Medical School through Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and primarily practices at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. He is board certified in PM&R and sports medicine. He is also the team physician for Rivers High School. In his practice he treats non-operative conditions of the shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, elbows, and wrists in addition to the spine in the active individual.

A Top Hospital in America
Mass General is recognized as a top hospital on the U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll for 2025-2026.
He had his mind made up before he saw me that the [redacted] tear on the right side was the reason for bilateral pain. That surgery won't help & since the cortisone in the past didn't help there's no point. He actually said, I can't fix it. With out following up with but we can try or anything... he said, what do you want me to do?
The doctor listened to my concerns, answered all my questions and made me feel comfortable.
Dr. Makovitch was extremely attentive. He was very helpful. He was very precise, very direct in his ability as being a doctor and somebody that I would trust mostly, especially at this time. I would highly recommend him.
Reception brisk...asked for my id! First time anyone has ever asked me...ever, anywhere in all of mass general! Felt weird...do I look suspicious?
For back pain, 10 weeks is far too long to wait for an appointment
Great service. Explanation and guidance to solve my problem. When asked the doctor was very helpful and answered responsibly and sincerely.
Seen this gentleman two times and he's helped me immensely both times he's caring. He's very good at what he does and that's what makes me happy about going to see him. He gets results in a positive way.
Everyone at MGH is amazing - one of the receptionists at 3300 blue building is a little curt but everyone else is amazing
He did not spend enough time with me. I felt rushed.
Extremely professional. Provided a skilled exam and his thoughts on probable causes for discomfort and detailed treatment plan for Physical Therapy. He reviewed recent R hip x-ray results and past lumbar.
