Our Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists
Learn More
CRNAs at Mass General are integral members of the department and passionate about patient safety and process improvement.
The Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Management at Massachusetts General Hospital comprises certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), anesthesiologists, surgeons, medical students and residents, and researchers. Each year, we deliver more than 42,000 anesthetics across 25 locations on the Mass General campus.
What is a CRNA?
In 1846, the first successful public demonstration of the use of ether for surgical anesthesia was performed at Mass General and changed the surgical experience for patients. CRNAs have been providing anesthesia care to patients in the United States, and Boston community, for more than 150 years. CRNAs have worked at Mass General for a few decades, but in greater numbers only recently.
Our CRNAs are licensed, registered, advanced-practice providers. After gaining an extensive background in critical care medicine, CRNAs enter accredited graduate schools and specialize in nurse anesthesia. After receiving a master’s degree and/or doctorate in nurse anesthesia, CRNAs obtain board certification and enter every clinical practice setting. At Mass General, we practice a care team model to:
- Review patients' medical history
- Assist in selection of the type of anesthesia used for specific procedures
- Administer anesthetics
- Monitor patients during procedures
- Provide immediate post-anesthesia care
At Mass General, CRNAs are well-rounded clinicians who can perform in versatile environments and have access to a myriad of educational and research opportunities. Mass General anesthetizing locations are dynamic and offer variety in procedures, settings and patients. CRNAs are integral members of the department and passionate about patient safety and process improvement.
