A Hub of Innovation in the Heart of Boston

Massachusetts General Hospital is home to the largest hospital-based research enterprise in the United States, with an annual budget of over $1 billion in 2019.

Research at Mass General takes place in more than 30 departments, institutes, and centers interwoven throughout the hospital. It is powered by a community of 9,500+ people, including over 2,000 principal investigators and 1,500+ postdoctoral researchers.

Our diverse research portfolio spans the entire spectrum of biomedical research—from fundamental, lab-based investigation into the basic building blocks of life to clinical trials investigating new treatment strategies for depression, cancer, diabetes and many more.

The Mass General Research Institute was established in 2015 to support, promote and guide this diverse research enterprise.

Our researchers work side-by-side with physicians—in the lab, in the clinic and at the bedside—harnessing the latest technological advancements to foster discovery at every stage.

Mass General is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. We are located at the nexus of the Boston-Cambridge biotech cluster, which provides numerous opportunities to collaborate with partners from industry, private foundations and venture capital.

The Mass General Research Institute is built on a culture of excellence, compassion and groundbreaking scientific achievement. Research plays a crucial role in our efforts to prevent disease, reduce healthcare costs, support the communities we serve, train the next generation of scientists and improve the lives of patients—both here at Mass General and across the globe.
