About Uzma Shah, MD, MBBS

Dr. Shah trained in medicine at Dow Medical College with a residency in Pediatrics in Chicago 1994 and fellowship at Children's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston 1996. Her work has included research in mucosal immunology, viral hepatitis and cystic fibrosis. She was the founding Chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Pakistan. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health Pakistan, World Health Organization and UNICEF, she has contributed extensively to major regional development in Child Health and Global Health Programs against viral hepatitis. She was the Director of Research at Harvard Medical School Dubai, with a mandate to develop the Research Master Plan for the region. She served as an academic lead for the development of a 300 bed University Hospital and on the steering committee for a 200 bed Pediatric facility at Dubai. She led the development of Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Dubai Medical Suites. She is currently an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School; Clinical Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition; Director of the Center for Pediatric Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disease at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) and the Medical Director of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program. Her research interests include viral hepatitis, inherited metabolic liver disease, liver transplantation and chronic pancreatitis.

Research

Dr Shah and her group are involved in the study of viral hepatitis in children and its treatment. Metabolic and genetic liver disease, the study of acute liver failure, new diagnostic tools in the evaluation of chronic liver disease, fatty liver disease, chronic and hereditary pancreatitis and its relationship with food allergy.
