Space Maintainers

When primary (baby) teeth are lost prematurely, space maintainers help guide permanent teeth into place.

Primary or "baby" teeth play an important role in guiding permanent teeth into place as they erupt.  When primary teeth are lost prematurely, your dentist may recommend space maintainers--made of metal bands and wires--to help prevent the space from collapsing and to allow permanent teeth to erupt properly.  Improper eruption of permanent teeth can lead to malocclusion and may require braces later on to correct the bite.
