About Dana Stearns, MD

Dr. Stearns has been an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital since 1993. He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency training in Emergency Medicine at the John Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Stearns is the Director of Anatomy Education Pathways Curriculum at Harvard Medical School. He is the Associate Director of the Clerkship in Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a Senior Advisor for the William Bosworth Castle Academic Society and an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Stearns participated in the development of the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency (HAEMR) Program and continue to serve as a faculty attending for HAEMR and has served as co-director for the HMS Emergency Medicine Clerkship elective at MGH.  He has been extremely active in understanding and utilizing a wide variety of teaching methods ranging from problem-based and case-based learning methodology to most recently synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning commonly used in HMS.  He created and maintains a cadaver-based an invasive procedure laboratory for resident education in many procedures required for graduation.

Dr. Stearns has participated extensively in developing awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity and disparity on the CCC Committee at HMS as well as the Dept. of EM's Collaborative Practice Committee at MGH.  He was named a Founding Member of The Academy at Harvard Medical School. The Academy aims to advance the training of future physicians by supporting the educational activities of the most effective and innovative teachers at HMS.

Research

Dr. Stearns is co-author of a handbook of emergency medicine for residents and medical students. He has authored several chapters in emergency medicine textbooks and created a series of questions for specialty board certification review texts. He is an editor for www.emedicine.com.  Dr. Stearns has been at lecturer and tutor for several preclinical courses at HMS since 1996.  He has been a Lecturer in Anatomy for the Tufts Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine since 1993.  He was named a member of the Curriculum Reform Committee at HMS.  Dr. Stearns has participated in the course design, provided lectures created problem-based educational programs for the anatomy course, created and provided simulator education programs for preclinical programs at HMS as well as the Principle Clinical Experience (PCE) Core Surgery Clerkship at MGH.  Dr. Stearns is currently working on an on-line educational resource for undergraduate clerks rotating on the MGH surgical service.
