About Markella Zanni, MD

Dr. Markella Zanni is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She serves as Associate Chief and Director of Women's Health Research in the Metabolism Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Zanni received her A.B. from Harvard College and her M.D. from Harvard Medical School. Her scientific research advancing women's health has been recognized by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research, and the Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Harvard. Dr. Zanni has been named a Claflin Distinguished Scholar at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is also the recipient of the Stephen Calderwood Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Medicine, the Award for Excellence in Research Mentoring from the Massachusetts General Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program, and the Mentoring for Inclusion and Diversity Award from the Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Harvard.

Research

Dr. Zanni’s translational research centers on elucidating immune and hormonal processes predisposing aging women to myocardial infarction and heart failure. She is also an expert on sex-differences in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Zanni’s work is geared toward identifying rational, sex-specific strategies to prevent cardiovascular diseases among special populations of women, including women with HIV.
