About Christopher DiGiovanni, MD

Dr. DiGiovanni is an internationally recognized foot and ankle surgeon. He earned his BA from Dartmouth College and his MD from the Brown University-Dartmouth Medical School Program. Dr. DiGiovanni completed his residency at Brown University before completing a number of fellowships:

Before joining Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. DiGiovanni served as Professor and Program Director of the Orthopaedic Residency at Brown University, where he was also Chief of the Foot and Ankle Service, Foot and Ankle Fellowship Program Director and Founder of the Joe DiMaggio Sports Foot and Ankle Center.

Dr. DiGiovanni has been honored many times by his patients with Patient Choice and Compassionate Doctor Awards. He has received the Excellence in Teaching Award by his residents, and has received the Order of Merit from the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation for his philanthropic support over the years. He serves on the surgical advisory boards of a number of companies, has published over 200 peer review articles, edited five textbooks and helped receive patents and FDA approvals for foot and ankle devices and related technologies to improve patient care. He is Vice President of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Dr. DiGiovanni is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and is Vice Chair (Academic Affairs) for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at MGH. As Chief of the Division of Foot & Ankle Surgery, he also oversees the Foot and Ankle Services at both MGH and Newton-Wellesley Hospital, as well as the MGH-NWH Foot and Ankle Research and Innovation Lab.

He serves on the editorial board of various journals and also remains a consultant team physician for teams and athletes from collegiate, professional and Olympic programs. His greatest professional commitment, however, will always be the residents and fellows he teaches and the patients he cares for each day.

Dr. DiGiovanni's research is devoted to improving foot and ankle function with state-of-the-art procedures involving total ankle replacement, growth factor incorporation to improve bone healing rates, sports and fracture care, minimally invasive arthroscopy, limb salvage surgery, bunion and hammertoe reconstruction and various new soft tissue balancing operations designed to maximize and preserve function of the foot and ankle.

He is currently on the Managerial Board of the journal Foot and Ankle International, sits on the International Editorial Board of the European Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery and has been a consultant reviewer for a number of other orthopaedic journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
