About Benjamin Geisler, MD
Benjamin P. Geisler, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., M.R.C.P. (London), F.H.M. is a board-certified internist who practices hospital medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is an international medical graduate from Germany (Charite - Universitaetsmedizin Berlin) and completed a categorical internal medicine residency at NYU School of Medicine in New York City, NY. Prior to clinical training, Ben was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in decision science at Massachusetts General Hospital and also completed a Master's degree in Public Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
As a general medicine doctor, he embraces coordinating clinical care for his patients between the inpatient and outpatient settings and among treating subspecialists. Ben individualizes evidence-based practices, takes patients' preference into account, practices shared medical decision making, and aims to increase the efficiency or value of health care services to provide highly patient- and family-centered care. He is particularly interested in cardiovascular diseases and their prevention, antimicrobial prescribing, rare diseases and diagnostic dilemmas across medical sub-specialties.
Ben is also a health services researcher, decision-analytic modeler, and health economist. His main position is Senior Consultant at Wing Tech Inc. in the U.S. where he has worked since 2009. Wing Tech Inc. is a management and technology consulting firm applying cutting-edge decision theory and advanced systems analysis and risk management techniques to help its clients identify, quantify, and manage their risks and opportunities.
He served as a co-editor of a peer-reviewed journal in those fields, Value in Health, for eight years and is currently on the editorial boards of Pharmacoeconomics and PLOS One. His research had applications across medical conditions although most were in cardiovascular disease. Ben enjoys teaching as well as running quality improvement/patient safety (QI/PS) projects.
Recently, Ben has become interested in "big data" and how to use routinely collected health information for research and QI/PS. He has therefore joined a medical informatics research group at Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich in Germany.
Ben's ultimate career goal is to be an active citizen in the academic hospital medicine and outcomes research communities.
