About J. Sawalla Guseh, MD
James Sawalla Guseh II, MD, is a cardiologist specializing in sports cardiology and cardiovascular performance at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He directs the Cardiovascular Performance Program, where he cares for athletes and highly active individuals across the lifespan, with a focus on exercise-induced cardiovascular physiology, return-to-play decision-making, coronary and arrhythmic disorders in athletes, and performance-based assessment using cardiopulmonary exercise testing.
Dr. Guseh's clinical and research interests center on the intersection of exercise, cardiovascular remodeling, and human performance. He has published on the cardiovascular biology of exercise, athlete ECG interpretation, deep learning tools for predicting fitness from the electrocardiogram, and molecular responses to acute and chronic training.
He serves as Team Cardiologist for the New England Patriots and the New England Revolution and partners with collegiate and tactical programs to support cardiovascular safety and performance. His program evaluates high performance elite athlete evaluations across North America and is an internationally resource for athlete-focused cardiovascular care.
He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
