About Abe Mohapatra, MD
Abhisekh (Abe) Mohapatra, MD, MS, is a vascular surgeon at the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. At both hospitals, he treats the full spectrum of arterial and venous diseases. He is particularly interested in aortic pathologies and peripheral arterial disease and is specialized in both traditional (open) and minimally invasive (endovascular) treatment techniques. He is the Medical Director of the accredited Vein Centers at Mass General West and Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Medical Director of the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Vascular Laboratory.
Dr. Mohapatra’s research focuses on analyzing comparative effectiveness and constructing risk prediction models for adverse outcomes after vascular surgery. He is especially interested in better delineating patient factors that can predict poor post-operative outcomes to inform patient selection and counseling. He has methodological expertise in the use of large datasets—such as the Vascular Quality Initiative and the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program—to answer these nuanced clinical questions.
Dr. Mohapatra takes an active role in the education of fellows, residents and medical students on the vascular surgery services at Mass General. He is an Associate Program Director for the Mass General residency and fellowship programs, and an Associate Clerkship Director for the Harvard Medical School students. He is regionally and nationally recognized for his clinical and educational expertise and holds multiple committee memberships in national societies.
