About Uma Sachdeva, MD, PhD

Dr. Sachdeva is a thoracic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, and Director of Clinical Operations for the Mass General Brigham integrated Division of Thoracic Surgery. She received her MD and PhD in cell and molecular biology through the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Pennsylvania after completing her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Harvard College. She is a graduate of the MGH General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery training programs. She practices all aspects of thoracic surgery with specialty practice in thoracic oncology. She has particular expertise in endoscopic, minimally invasive and robotic surgical treatment of esophageal and lung cancers and mediastinal and thymic tumors. She sees patients and operates at the main MGH campus in Boston and MGB network sites including Salem Hospital and Emerson Hospital. She has developed patient-centered technologies for education and symptom monitoring following esophagectomy and studies clinical outcomes related to esophageal cancer. In addition to her clinical practice, she leads a translational research laboratory working to develop new treatments and personalized medicine approaches for esophageal cancer and precursor lesions, including Barrett's esophagus. She was selected into the NCI Early-stage Surgeon Scientist Program and has been awarded numerous local and national funding awards, including the 2nd David C. Sabiston Research Scholarship from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Research Scholarship from the Thoracic Surgery Foundation.
