About Krystle Tuano, MD

Dr. Krystle Tuano is a board-certified General Surgeon and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specializing in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery, microsurgery, limb salvage, replantation surgery, and peripheral nerve surgery. She provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with complex injuries, focusing on restoring function, preventing complications, and improving quality of life.

She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and earned her medical degree with a Scholarly Concentration in Nutrition from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. During her General Surgery training at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, she gained extensive experience at a high-volume trauma center, sparking her passion for trauma and reconstructive surgery. This shaped her commitment to treating complex injuries, including combined orthopaedic and soft tissue trauma, severe extremity injuries, and patients facing challenging social circumstances—many of whom were visiting from across the country and internationally. She completed Plastic Surgery residency at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and fellowship training in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. She now serves as faculty in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and holds an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Tuano also leads international collaborations on sport-specific upper extremity injuries in climbers. In partnership with the International Federation of Sport Climbing, she focuses on injury prevention, long-term athlete health, and safe training practices for climbers at all levels.

Dedicated to education and mentorship, Dr. Tuano supports trainees at all stages and contributes to collaborative networks including the MGH Hand and Arm Research Collaborative and the Interdisciplinary Care for Amputees Network Research Team. She is actively involved in leadership roles on committees within the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Through her clinical practice, education, and mentorship, she is committed to advancing reconstructive surgery and improving care for patients with complex injuries and diverse needs.

Research

I am a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity surgery, reconstructive plastic surgery, microsurgery, limb salvage, and replantation surgery. I am dedicated to advancing evidence-based strategies that improve surgical outcomes, reduce infection risk, enhance quality and safety, and shorten hospital stays in reconstructive surgery. I lead international collaborations studying sport-specific upper extremity injuries in (rock) climbers, integrating validated tools (LEAF-Q, LEAM-Q, EDE-QS) to monitor long-term athlete health. My work is grounded in multidisciplinary collaboration, translational research, and a commitment to advancing evidence-based care and mentorship in reconstructive surgery.
