The Mass General Brigham Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides a wealth of free, confidential 24/7 services to all staff at Mass General, and throughout the Mass General Brigham system.
“We often get the question of who we are and what we do, and I like to say that we’re the social workers for employees,” says Allison Lilly, director of EAP. “It’s important to normalize the stigma attached to seeking out mental health services. We all have needs and today we have more and more people reaching out for help. EAP is a way for staff to get access to the proper mental health support services and work life resources.”
Through counseling, referrals, training and education, EAP also offers assistance in a number of other areas–both inside and outside of the hospital–including the following:
In addition, EAP offers webinars for clinicians and staff on a variety of timely topics, including stress, sleep, digital burnout and how to stay healthy while working remotely. These virtual sessions are recorded and then housed on the department’s newly updated website
for easy access at any time.
“The past year has been extremely difficult for everyone,” Lilly says. “There is the isolation that everyone is experiencing, but for those who are working remotely, there is also the loss of colleagues and loss of connectiveness. Many employees have a fear of exposure to COVID-19 and a new volume of work on top of the losses they’ve experienced.”
Lilly says EAP staff also is able to meet with departments to provide support in the wake of traumatic events, to help alleviate some of the stress associated with COVID-19 care or when faced with disruptive patients. EAP clinicians facilitate these group conversations–both in person and virtually–or provide individual support when needed.
