About Barbara Cashavelly, RN, DNP, NE-BC

Barbara Cashavelly, RN, DNP, NE-BC is an Associate Chief Nurse for Oncology, Women and Children and Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. Barbara’s career began at Mass General as a nurse intern, and she later worked on a variety of units as a staff nurse. She served as a Nursing Director on a Medical Oncology inpatient unit and the Oncology Nurse Practitioner Service for 8 years. Prior to that position, she was a Nursing Director in the Mass General Cancer Center Outpatient Multidisciplinary Disease Practices. She has created a supportive environment for her clinical and support staff team to provide safe, quality patient- and family centered care. She has also led many initiatives including, the transition of a general medical unit to an oncology unit, the design and implementation of an oncology nurse residency program, and the launch and oversight of an inpatient Oncology Nurse Practitioner Service. She is a member Pharmacy and Therapeutics Executive Subcommittee.

Barbara has presented at the Oncology Nursing Society Congress, American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), Cancer Patient Education Network and the 2nd International Conference on Patient and Family Centered Care. Her global health activities have included oncology and leadership development consultation in Kazakhstan, Qatar and China.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Simmons College and Master of Science in Nursing in oncology nursing from Boston University. Barbara is a board-certified Nurse Executive and holds an Advanced Oncology Nurse certification and is currently attending the Mass General Institute of Health Professions to pursue her doctorate in Nursing Practice. She is both a certified Nurse Executive and Certified Oncology Nurse. Barbara is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, Sigma Theta Tau and has been the President and Board member of the Boston Oncology Nursing Chapter.
