Receiving a second opinion can reassure you about a challenging diagnosis, or help you plan the most appropriate course of treatment.

How it Works

  1. Create a Grand Rounds account: Here you will provide information about your condition and specify the questions you'd Mass General specialists to answer.
  2. Grand Rounds contacts your doctors: Grand Rounds medical professionals will contact your local primary care doctor or other health care providers to collect your medical records and any test results or medical imaging you have had done. These materials will be provided to the Mass General specialist who will review your case.
  3. Receive your opinion: Once your medical records have been collected, you and your local physician will receive your detailed second opinion report within two weeks. Grand Rounds staff will follow up with you to answer any questions.

Cost

The cost for most remote second opinions is $850 USD. In rare cases, the complexity of the case will require our specialist to consult with other colleagues, including radiologists and pathologists. In these cases, an additional fee will apply and you will be contacted to approve the payment.

Privacy

Massachusetts General Hospital and Grand Rounds are strongly committed to protecting the privacy and security of all our patients. The Grand Rounds portal meets federal requirements for protecting personal health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

What specialties are available for remote second opinions?
Massachusetts General Hospital experts are available in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery, including cancer, digestive disorders, heart disease, neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, transplantation and vascular medicine. Pediatric specialists from MassGeneral Hospital for Children are also available for consultations.
How is the specialist chosen?
Once you submit a request for a remote second opinion, Massachusetts General Hospital staff will identify the most qualified expert based on your medical information and specific questions.
How much does a remote second opinion cost?
The cost for most remote second opinions is $850. In rare cases, the complexity of the case will require our specialist to consult with other colleagues, including radiologists and pathologists. In these cases, an additional fee will apply and you will be contacted to approve the payment.
Will my insurance cover the cost of a remote second opinion?
Currently, most health plans do not cover remote second opinions or consultations, so patients are responsible for the cost of the second opinion. Mass General cannot file a claim with your insurance carrier, nor can we provide a procedure (CPT) code for this service.
I need information quickly. Can I request an urgent opinion?
We will do our best to accommodate urgent requests based on the availability of our specialists and how long it takes to collect your medical records. An additional fee may apply.
Can I schedule a follow-up appointment with the specialist who provided my remote second opinion?
In many cases, yes. After you and your local doctor receive the second opinion, a physician from Grand Rounds will contact you to answer any questions and discuss next steps. If you would like to schedule an in-person visit with a doctor at Mass General, please alert your Grand Rounds doctor.
Is this service available to anyone?

At this time, we cannot provide remote second opinions to patients living in Alabama, Alaska, Iowa, Maine, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming due to regulatory constraints.
