- How is the specialist chosen?
Once you submit a request for a remote second opinion, Massachusetts General Hospital staff will identify the most qualified expert based on your medical information and specific questions.
How much does a remote second opinion cost?
The cost for most remote second opinions is $850. In rare cases, the complexity of the case will require our specialist to consult with other colleagues, including radiologists and pathologists. In these cases, an additional fee will apply and you will be contacted to approve the payment.
Will my insurance cover the cost of a remote second opinion?
Currently, most health plans do not cover remote second opinions or consultations, so patients are responsible for the cost of the second opinion. Mass General cannot file a claim with your insurance carrier, nor can we provide a procedure (CPT) code for this service.
I need information quickly. Can I request an urgent opinion?
We will do our best to accommodate urgent requests based on the availability of our specialists and how long it takes to collect your medical records. An additional fee may apply.
Can I schedule a follow-up appointment with the specialist who provided my remote second opinion?
In many cases, yes. After you and your local doctor receive the second opinion, a physician from Grand Rounds will contact you to answer any questions and discuss next steps. If you would like to schedule an in-person visit with a doctor at Mass General, please alert your Grand Rounds doctor.
Is this service available to anyone?
At this time, we cannot provide remote second opinions to patients living in Alabama, Alaska, Iowa, Maine, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming due to regulatory constraints. If you live in one of these states and would like to schedule an in-person appointment for a second opinion at Mass General, please call 617-726-4444.
