What specialties are available for remote second opinions?
Massachusetts General Hospital specialists are available in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery, including cancer, digestive disorders, heart disease, neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, transplantation and vascular medicine. Pediatric specialists from Mass General for Children are also available for second opinions.

How is the specialist chosen?

After carefully reviewing your second opinion request and medical records, our experienced team will determine which Mass General specialist is most appropriate to handle your online second opinion case. You may request a particular specialist, but we cannot guarantee that specialist will be available or appropriate to be assigned to your case.

How much does a remote second opinion cost?
The cost for most online second opinions is $950. In rare cases, the complexity of the case will require our specialist to consult with other specialists, including radiologists and pathologists. In these cases, an additional fee will apply, and you will be contacted to approve the payment.

Will my insurance cover the cost of a remote second opinion?
Currently most health plans do not cover online second opinions, so you are responsible for the cost of the second opinion. Mass General cannot file a claim with your insurance carrier, nor can we provide a procedure (CPT) code for this service.

What is the timeline to receive an online second opinion?
We do our best to deliver your second opinion as quickly as possible. However, the timeline can vary based on the amount of time it takes to obtain your medical records and the availability of the specialist best suited to review your case. Typically, it takes 5 to 7 business days after all your medical records have been collected to receive your online second opinion.

I need my second opinion quickly. Can I request an urgent opinion?
We will do our best to accommodate urgent requests based on how long it takes to collect your medical records and the availability of the specialist assigned to your case. An additional fee may apply.

Can I schedule a follow-up appointment with the specialist who provided my remote second opinion?
In many cases, yes. After you and your local physician receive the second opinion, you will be contacted by Grand Rounds, the company we have engaged to assist with your second opinion, to answer any questions and discuss next steps. At that time you can indicate if you would like to schedule an in-person visit at Mass General. 

Is this service available to anyone?
At this time, due to regulatory constraints we cannot provide online second opinions to patients living in Alabama, Alaska, Iowa, Maine, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. If you live in one of these states and would like to schedule an in-person appointment at Mass General, please contact the clinical department directly. A list of departments can be found here

Can I include additional medicals records, labs, or scans once the case is submitted?
Your case cannot be reviewed by a specialist until we have received all the required records. Should additional medical records, labs or imaging become available once your case is submitted, we cannot add them to your case, and the specialist will not be able to review them. If new information becomes available after your case is submitted, you are welcome to create a new case and request the same expert who reviewed your first case. Please be aware that we cannot guarantee that the same expert will be available to review your second case.

How many questions can I ask the specialist?
You may pose up to eight questions to the specialist.  Unfortunately, additional questions cannot be added after your case is submitted. Please note that we are generally unable to facilitate direct communication with the specialist.

What should I expect to receive once my second opinion is complete?
You will receive a notification when your second opinion has been completed and is ready for your review. After you have reviewed the second opinion, a Grand Rounds team member will follow up with you by phone to address any questions you may have about the information provided in the second opinion.

What if I have follow-up questions for the specialist after I have reviewed my second opinion?
If you have a question about the specialist’s response, and a Grand Rounds team member is unable to address it, then we can contact the specialist to request additional clarification.  Please know, however, that we cannot always guarantee that the specialist will be available to answer your follow-up questions.  Follow-up questions should be submitted within five business days of when the second opinion was delivered, and you may ask up to three clarifying questions.

What if my medical records are not in English?
All medical records, labs and reports must be professionally translated into American English before they are submitted. Professional medical translators have an understanding of medical terminology and the nuances of the languages involved. Having your records professionally translated provides the specialist with the most accurate information.
