How Do Doctors Treat BED?

Treatment depends on your physical and mental health symptoms and needs. The care team will talk with you and your family to create a treatment plan.

Common BED treatments can include:

  • Meetings with a dietitian, primary care provider and other specialists
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Therapy that focuses on how thoughts and feelings affect behavior.
  • Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). Therapy that focuses on your relationship with your self-image.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Therapy focused on learning healthy coping skills and understanding emotions.
  • Group therapy with others who also struggle with BED
  • Medications to treat medical or mental health conditions, including antidepressants (such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs), topiramate (an anti-seizure medication) or lisdexamfetamine (a stimulant medication).
