About Nanda Kerkar, MBBS, MD

Nanda Kerkar, MD, FAASLD is the Section Chief of Pediatric Liver Program and Medical Director of the Pediatric Liver transplant and Pediatric Hepatobiliary Center at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. She completed her medical education in India, and then moved to the United Kingdom where she did her pediatric residency and fellowship. Her general pediatric, pediatric gastroenterology and pediatric transplant hepatology fellowship was completed over 5 years at King’s College Hospital, London, UK after which she received a Certificate of Completion of Higher Specialist Training. She additionally spent 2 years doing bench research establishing an assay to detect liver kidney microsomal antibody, marker of type 2 autoimmune hepatitis, did further investigations using the assay, wrote her thesis and defended it to obtain a MD from the University of London, UK. 

Dr Kerkar moved to USA in 2002 and over the last two decades has been involved in the care of children and adolescents with liver disease and liver transplant recipients. She is triple board certified (Pediatrics, Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology) and is active in numerous societies and organizations. She has practiced in New York and California before joining here in October 2023. She has been involved in several multi-center studies funded by the NIDDK, FDA and pharmaceutical companies. She has been named to the American Pediatric Society in 2014 and is a Fellow of the American Association of the Study of liver Disease (FAASLD)TShe hopes to get some of the research studies started here, so that patients can have access to the latest diagnostic tests and therapies early. Her research interests include autoimmune liver disease, cholestatic liver diseases including biliary atresia, alagille syndrome, sclerosing cholangitis as well as metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease. She has over a 150 peer reviewed publications, including authorship in national guidelines for autoimmune hepatitis and has co-edited a book on Wilson Disease. She is dedicated to the care of children with liver disease and with a multidisciplinary team here at Mass General is working to provide state of the art care to children with liver disease and liver transplants.
