Harvard Medical School Core Clerkship in Pediatrics
MassGeneral Hospital for Children provides an important resource for the education of medical students. Students come for their core clerkship in pediatrics, sub-internship in pediatrics and electives in pediatric subspecialties. All education experiences are coordinated under the guidance of Harvard Medical School.
Core Clerkship in Pediatrics
Course Number: IN550M.3B
Working with children provides many opportunities for observing the natural process of growth and maturation. By becoming involved in the clinical management of infants, children and adolescents, students familiarize themselves with indicators of health, strategies for disease and injury prevention, and treatment of medical conditions affecting children. Acquisition of clinical skills and a critical approach to clinical decision-making are emphasized. The clerkship includes three weeks of pediatric wards and one week each in the pediatric emergency room, newborn nursery and general pediatric outpatient settings. In each of these settings, students participate in all aspects of patient care under the supervision of residents and attendings. In addition to participating in work rounds, teaching attending rounds and daily case conferences, students attend a core lecture series on Friday afternoons. These lectures are attended by students in all core pediatric rotations and take place at both Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. This course is a component of the Core Clinical Clerkship in Women's and Children's Health. For more information, see the Harvard Medical School Course Listings.
