When it comes to answering common questions about your or your child’s care in Medical Genetics, there are many people who can help you. Below is a chart that can help you when you have questions, including non-urgent follow-up questions, prescription refills, scheduling appointments and more.

Emergency or urgent question

Choose one of the following:

  • Call the main hospital at 617-726-2000. Ask to page the Medical Genetics doctor on call.
  • Call 911.

The on call doctor or emergency operator

  • There is always a doctor on call to help you. They can give medical advice or help decide if you need to go to the emergency room. They can also tell the emergency doctors to be ready for when you arrive.

Non-urgent follow-up question for your doctor

Choose one of the following:

  • Patient Gateway®
  • Call Lauren O’Grady, MS, CGC, genetics counselor at MGHfC, at 617-643-8345.

Lauren or your geneticist (genetics doctor) will answer your question.

  • Great for test results or questions you forgot to ask at your visit
  • Your question will be answered in 1-3 business days

 

Non-urgent follow-up question about nutrition

Choose one of the following:

Dominica

  • Great for follow-up questions, diet updates or sharing food logs
  • Your question will be answered in 1-3 business days

 

Question at night or a weekend

For non-urgent calls, please wait until Monday when the Medical Genetics team is back in the office to answer your questions.

For urgent calls, please call the main hospital at 617-726-2000. Ask to page the Medical Genetics doctor on call.

The on call doctor

  • The Medical Genetics office is closed on weekends.
  • All calls must go through the on call doctor or wait until 8 a.m. on Monday.

Medication refill request

Choose one of the following:

  • Patient Gateway®
  • Call Lauren O’Grady, MS, CGC, genetics counselor at MGHfC, at 617-643-8345.
All medication refills will be passed along to the doctor who gave you the prescription.  
  • Please allow 10-14 days to process medication refill requests.
  • Many medications are specialty drugs that need prior authorization that take extra time.
  • Some medications need extra time to be made and packaged.
 Formula refill request  

Choose one of the following:

  • Patient Gateway®
  • Call Dominica Nichols, PhD, RD, LDN, your dietitian at MGHfC, at 617-643-9499.
Dominica will work with your geneticist to get more formula. 
  • Please allow 10-14 days to process medication refill requests.
  • All metabolic formulas need prior authorization that take extra time.
