Patricia O’Malley, MD, medical director of the Pediatric Palliative Care Service, has received the inaugural Ilene Beal Courageous Provider Award. The award recognizes a pediatric provider who provides exceptional family-centered care in circumstances of serious childhood illness, and who demonstrates qualities of compassion, empathy and an ability to accompany families during difficult phases of the illness journey.

The award committee cited O’Malley’s “dedication to seeing and treating the family unit with an eye to alleviating the physical and emotional pain, fear and isolation common to so many facing lifespan-limiting pediatric illness. The powerful combination of Pat O’Malley’s clinical acumen and sensitivity to the child’s and family’s needs promotes hope and courage, having a powerful impact under extraordinary, almost unthinkable, circumstances.”
