Ophthalmology services at Mass General for Children are provided by the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Department of Ophthalmology. The service provides vision screening and professional care for a variety of ophthalmic problems, including:

  • Evaluation and treatment of amblyopia
  • Pediatric cataracts
  • Retinopathy of prematurity
  • Congenital glaucoma
  • Pediatric and adult strabismus, including orthoptic evaluation, non-surgical and surgical treatment
  • Use of adjustable sutures in strabismus surgery
  • Botulinum injections
  • Prism adaptation

Care and treatment of pediatric corneal, retinal and orbital disorders as well as glaucoma are provided in conjunction with other ophthalmic subspecialists.

Specialty Care

Consultative care is provided to patients with problems including:

  • Blurry vision
  • Failed vision screens at school or the pediatrician
  • Strabismus such as crossed eyes, wandering eyes, “lazy eye”
  • Amblyopia
  • Difficulties learning

Surgical care is provided to patients with problems including:

  • Strabismus
  • Nasolacrimal duct obstruction
  • Cataract
  • Glaucoma
