Artist's rendition of the Cambridge Street building.

Massachusetts General Hospital has begun construction on a state-of-the-art Cambridge Street building, strengthening the hospital’s ability to provide exceptional patient care.

The scope of this capital expenditure will also trigger the largest Determination of Need (DoN) investment in Massachusetts history, expected to be more than $64 million distributed to our local communities. The priorities and strategies for this funding will be determined by the Mass General Community Advisory Committee with the distribution directed by the Allocation Committee, guided by the our 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment, which will be available in September of 2022.

Here is a timeline of the current process:

  • May 2022 – October/November 2022*
    • Community Advisory Board reviews MGH community engagement and Needs Assessment data, meets with experts in the field, selects priorities/strategies to fund.
    • Conduct a Conflict-of-Interest Process to determine which members move on to the Allocation Committee.
    Duration: 6 months
  • November 2022
Priority Strategy form due to the Department of Public Health (DPH).
Duration: Within 6 months of approval
  • November 2022 – February 2023
Allocation Committee must meet with experts, design funding vehicles, decide allocation plan, and carry out Request for Proposal or alternate funding process.
  • May 2023
Request for Proposal or alternative distribution processes must be completed.
Duration: Within 12 months of approval
