As part of its ongoing efforts to support and improve the care of patients in communities north and west of Boston, the Mass General Waltham Outpatient Surgery Center (OSC) will more than double its operating rooms and increase its offerings to include more multidisciplinary outpatient procedures.

The new footprint—set to open May 17—will feature six new operating rooms, for a total of 10. Expanded specialty services include general surgery, surgical oncology, gynecology, urology, interventional radiology, and additional gastrointestinal procedures, such as colonoscopies and endoscopies.

“Our main mission is to provide outstanding, Mass General-quality care to the greater Waltham community—conveniently located at the confluence of Route 95 and the Mass Pike,” says David Boyce, MD, medical director of the Mass General Waltham OSC. “With this expansion, we will be able to offer easier access to patients who need, for example, endoscopies or interventional radiology. Patients who don’t want to, or cannot, travel into Boston now have the option of coming to Mass General Waltham for their outpatient procedures.”

Importantly, adds Boyce, the surgeons, nurses and anesthesia teams who provide care at the Waltham OSC are all Mass General staff. At the OSC, patients will receive the same excellent care as they would at Mass General's Boston campus, with the added convenience of free parking onsite. “We maintain all of the standards that would be found at the hospital, but in an outpatient ambulatory setting.”

For 16 years the OSC has been a vital satellite location for orthopaedic care, working in tandem with Mass General’s main campus to provide the highest quality care in a fully outpatient setting to patients at an easy to get to community location. Staff work toward—and continue to improve upon—providing top patient satisfaction and a first-class experience.

“We have, for 16 years, successfully scored 97% or higher on patient satisfaction surveys. For me as a nursing leader that is extraordinary,” says Claire O’Brien, RN, executive director of Nursing at the Waltham OSC. “The top two comments we get from our patients are that our employees are happy working here, and work as a team. Patients notice this, feel well-supported and continue to return for care.”

“We are thrilled to enhance our service to our community with these added multi-specialty surgical services,” says Boyce, “and to be able to provide the same expert level care that is associated with Mass General outside the walls of the downtown hospital.”
