Dr. Allan is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He has a full-time faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School. His clinical interests include the surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the lungs and esophagus (including lung cancer and esophageal cancer) and palmar hyperhidrosis. Dr. Allan is the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and the Assoc. Chief of Thoracic Surgery at North Shore Medical Center.
Dr. Allan is an NIH-funded investigator in the area of lung transplantation, and has won numerous grants and awards for his research. His current efforts focus on developing strategies to promote the long-term acceptance of transplanted organs without the need for immunosuppression. He is extensively published in the fields of human physiology, thoracic surgery, and transplantation, with special expertise in use of large-animal models in cardiothoracic transplantation.
Dr. Allan has held leadership positions in several national societies in the areas of transplantation and health policy, and is a Past-President of the American Society of Transplantation. He also chairs protocol review for the MGH Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
