Research Areas
- Application of noninvasive ventilatory support for acute respiratory failure
- Lung protective ventilation in the operating room
- Mechanical ventilation strategies in critically ill patients –severe ALI/ARDS
- New ventilation technologies –ASV, NAVA
Description of Research
Our research focuses on the application of advanced modes in the ventilatory management of critically ill patients. Using lung simulators, we test the performance of current and developing ventilators for a variety of lung disease conditions (e.g. ALI, ARDS, COPD) commonly seen in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Our ongoing clinical projects include:
- Lung recruitment techniques, PEEP adjustments and their physiological effects in patients with severe ARDS
- Application of unidirectional breathing techniques for acute respiratory failure in patients with COPD
- An international randomized control trial to compare NAVA mode with conventional ventilation in ICU
- An international randomized control trial on lung protective ventilation in the operating room.
We are also interested in the epidemiology of invasive and noninvasive ventilation use and currently reviewing major data regarding the change of mechanical ventilation use for the last decade.
