Honoring Excellence and Representation in Oncology for Inspiring Cancer (HEROIC) Scholars Program
The HEROIC Scholars Program, hosted by the Mass General Cancer Center in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, is a 24-month post-baccalaureate training initiative. It aims to expand access to cancer research careers by providing recent college graduates with mentored training and a personalized Professional Development Plan (IDP) to support their path toward doctoral-level education in science or medicine.
Through this groundbreaking program, participants will receive exceptional training in cancer biology, translational science, and clinical research in preparation to become future leaders in academic medicine.
Program Highlights
- Comprehensive Training: Scholars will receive hands-on experience in biomedical, translational, and clinical oncology research, with specialized training in promoting opportunity, access, and excellence in cancer research.
- Mentorship: Each scholar will be paired with experienced mentors committed to comprehensive, student-centered guidance and professional development.
- Workshops and Skills Development: Scholars can attend research-oriented workshops on topics such as molecular oncology, immunotherapy, biomarker discovery, computational approaches, and clinical trial design.
- Clinical Exposure: Opportunities to shadow oncologists, observe surgeries, and engage in clinical design processes to complement their research training.
- Career Development: Tailored Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to track progress, build skills, and ‘boot camp’ to prepare successful graduate and medical school applications.
- Community and Networking: Participation in professional events, conferences, and peer-to-peer mentoring groups fosters collaboration and a sense of belonging.
- Eligible for all full-time benefits at Mass General
