About Motaz Qadan, MD, PhD
Motaz Qadan, MD, PhD, surgical director of the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital since 2023, is a nationally recognized expert in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgical oncology. Dr. Qadan leads one of the highest-volume programs in the country for complex liver and pancreas surgery, consistently achieving outcomes that meet the highest standards of quality and safety. In addition, he has served as section head of the Hepatobiliary/Liver Program at Mass General, where he is an integral member of the multidisciplinary team delivering coordinated, personalized care for patients with gastrointestinal cancers. His clinical expertise includes the surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer, liver tumors, bile duct cancer, and metastatic disease involving the liver.
Dr. Qadan earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Edinburgh Medical School, one of Western Europe’s leading medical institutions. He completed his general surgery residency at Stanford University, where he was administrative chief resident, followed by a fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he also served as educational coordinator. Dr. Qadan is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Research
The Qadan laboratory focuses on the tumor microenvironment in pancreas cancer. Current scientific and translational efforts in his laboratory include the evaluation of the radiosensitizing effects of Losartan in orthotopic pancreatic cancer tumor models and new imaging biomarkers, such as Zinc magnetic resonance imaging, for early and accurate detection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
Dr. Qadan is also interested in clinical outcomes health services research and leads a large group of researchers who focus on methods to collect, analyze, and improve outcomes related to cancer surgery at the institutional and national level. His projects have earned national recognition in the form of multiple prizes and awards over the last few months.
Dr. Qadan is an active clinical investigator in several high impact clinical trials. He is a principal investigator on a prehabilitation study entitled "Pilot Study of a Multimodal Prehabilitation Pancreatic Cancer Program" where he enrolls patients in an exercise and nutrition program to improve their outcomes during treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Qadan is actively involved in many National societies and holds active leadership roles in several organizations. He has over 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles as well as several book chapters and scientific abstracts. Dr. Qadan is an active member of the Gastrointestinal Malignancies Program at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.
