“People may not realize, but the MGH is a small city, and our operations support staff keep this city running smoothly for our patients and their loved ones,” said Sally Mason Boemer, senior vice president of Administration and Finance, during the June 10 Operations Support Staff Day celebration.
Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president, shared statistics representing the accomplishments and responsibilities of support staff departments for the past year (see infographic below).
The event also included the presentation of the annual Ricardo Diaz Award, named in honor of the beloved member of MGH Buildings and Grounds who died in 2003 while plowing snow on the MGH campus. This year’s award was presented to two individuals – Anais Morales Ortiz, technical assistant in Nuclear Medicine, and Xiu Ying Luo, Environmental Services aide for the Social Service Department.
“When I read the description of Mr. Diaz, I immediately was reminded of Ying,” said Sharon Scott, Lodging Program manager of MGH Social Service and Luo’s nominator. “Like Mr. Diaz, Ying is dedicated, kind, hardworking and committed to the MGH.”
Giuliana Arcovio, operations manager of Nuclear Medicine, lauded Morales Ortiz’s commitment to further her education by taking classes to become a registered nurse. “Anias always goes out of her way to help others with a smile. Her empathy and positivity make everyone’s days better. Her main goal is always to provide compassionate, quality care and encourage her coworkers to thrive.”
