I grew up on a farm outside a small town in South Dakota. Most residents, including my parents, had only a high school education. My mother regretted her decision not to pursue further education and firmly believed her children should not make the same mistake. Her prevailing motto was that one should use the gifts that they have been given to the best of one’s ability, to become the best that you can be. Surgery appealed to me for its mental, physical and technical challenges. I chose plastic surgery to combine the challenge of surgery with artistry. I hope to inspire the next generation of women to choose medicine and surgery as their career, and to inspire female surgeons to be the best that they can be.
