My grandmother came to live at my house the summer before she died, so I was home when the doctor and nurses made visits. One nurse created a sense of order and included me, then 11 years old, in the teachings to flush a catheter, give a bed bath and administer topical medications. I felt the calm presence of this nurse disperse the anxiety that had accumulated since her last visit. I felt my mother relax a little and I knew I wanted to create those conditions for others. Although I cannot remember the nurse’s name, she influenced my career choice.
