I became very interested in medicine when my father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. I remember the day he came home from the hospital after his operation and what an important, happy day that was for our family. Ultimately, he died of his disease when I was 13, but I still had so much respect for the physicians and nurses who cared for him and who were so kind to my mother, my siblings and me whenever we accompanied him to his radiation treatments or visited him in the hospital.
Since his death, I have never wavered from my goal of contributing to the fight against illness and disease. My 13-year-old self would never have believed that I would be on the path towards becoming a general surgeon. I am so grateful for the opportunity to take care of patients and families at Mass General, and I hope that I can do so with the same kindness that health care providers showed to my father.
