About George Theodore, MD

Dr. George Theodore specializes in sports related injuries of the foot, ankle and knee. He provides innovative treatments in a personalized setting to return patients to an active lifestyle.

Dr. Theodore is a native of Boston, and a graduate of both Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. He served as the Chief Resident at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and later completed a fellowship at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Theodore's interests include knee, ankle, and foot surgery, with a focus on sports-related injuries. He is a nationally recognized expert in the management of injuries in professional athletes and dancers, and he has treated some of the top athletes in the United States. Dr. Theodore is an expert in cartilage injuries, ligament injuries, and extracorporeal shockwave treatment. He has appeared on the Today Show, as well as various cable and local television programs. He has been featured in USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, Forbes Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Women's World, and National Public Radio.

Dr. Theodore serves as Team Physician for the Boston Red Sox, and he was part of the medical staff of the 2004 and 2007 World Series Championship Teams. He is a consultant to the New England Patriots, Boston Bruins and New England Revolution. Dr. Theodore is a faculty member of the Mass General Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

Research

Dr. Theodore's research interests include cartilage injuries. He is internationally recognized for his work on osteochondral injuries of the talus, and received the Nicola Foundation Young Research Award in 2009 from the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He also has developed an innovative online tutorial for the management of cartilage injuries in athletes.

Dr. Theodore is at the forefront of minimally invasive treatments for plantar fasciitis and tendinopathies. He has published extensively on the use of extracorporeal shockwave treatment for fasciitis. He is investigating platelet rich plasma treatments for various sports and dance injuries.

As a consultant to various professional sports teams, Dr. Theodore is pursuing research projects on ankle mechanics for improved sports rehabilitation and injury prevention. He is developing methods for the use of endoscopy to treat tendon and ligament injuries, and he is involved in outcome studies to assess the safety and effectiveness of minimally invasive treatments for knee disorders.
