Hand & Arm Service

Our Hand & Arm surgeons use innovative approaches to treat hand and elbow disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, nerve injuries, and complex hand & elbow fractures.

Our primary goal is to restore optimal hand or arm function and eliminate or reduce pain. Treating the upper limb is just one step in returning a patient to a fulfilling and productive life. Our approach emphasizes managing the patient’s entire picture of health.

We also provide a multispecialty approach in the management of patients with rheumatological disorders or with complex soft tissue wounds. Our co-location with the Rheumatology Service in our office space, as well as our very close interaction with the Plastic Surgery Service, allows us to comprehensively and effectively manage all our patients.

We have three broad areas:

  • Hand, Wrist & Microvascular: Our surgeons care for all hand and wrist problems from the common and simple, to the rare and complex. They are also expert microvascular surgeons, meaning that they can repair or move body parts as needed after major injury or reconstructive surgery.
  • Elbow: We treat the whole range of problems that can affect the elbow ranging from tendon disorders, compression of the nerves, ligament injuries, fractures and arthritis. Learn more about elbow surgery.
  • Brachial Plexus: The brachial plexus is the group of nerves that connect the arm to the brain and spinal cord. Our doctors are experts in caring for patients with the full range of arm nerve problems, including stroke-induced injuries, pain, numbness, trauma, congenital deformities and all other arm mobility and dexterity issues. Learn more about our Brachial Plexus & Nerve Disorders Program.

What to Expect:

At Mass General, you can expect compassionate, personalized care, which includes a comprehensive evaluation of your injury, a thorough diagnosis and a unique, customized treatment plan developed between you and your doctor. Our treatment plans are designed in concert with plastic surgeons, neurologists, occupational therapists and other specialists, all working to get you back to doing the things you love quickly and safely. Our doctors will treat your condition as conservatively as possible, and may recommend nonoperative treatments, such as medications, occupational therapy, casting or bracing or a minimally invasive surgery designed to restore function and mobility to your hand and arm.
