About Amgad Haleem Ahmed Amin, MD, PhD
Amgad M Haleem A Amin, MD, PhD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital specializing in lower extremity complex deformity reconstruction, limb lengthening, joint preservation and foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Haleem takes special interest in adult foot and ankle deformity, complex lower extremity deformity correction, and joint preservation. His current research is focused on cartilage-preserving procedures of major weight-bearing joints of the lower extremities (ankles, knees, and hips), with particular emphasis on the use of biologics such as stem cells.
Dr. Haleem earned his medical degree (with Honors) from Cairo University School of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt, the same institution through which he completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency. In 2008, Dr. Haleem was awarded a grant for Excellence in Scientific Achievement, allowing him to complete his PhD thesis in stem cell-based cartilage regeneration through a post-doc research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
After completing his PhD, Dr. Haleem continued his specialized education and training with a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery and a fellowship in lower limb complex reconstruction at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, NY; a Fellowship in orthopedic adult reconstructive surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX; and a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL.
Throughout his fellowship training, Dr. Haleem earned the privilege of caring for foot/ankle and lower extremity sports injuries in elite professional dancers and athletes. Notably, that list includes dancers of the New York City Ballet, NBA players of the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets, NFL players of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and collegiate athletes at the University of South Florida.

Research
Dr. Haleem's research covers a wide array of lower extremity pathologies with an emphasis on both clinical and translational basic science research. On the clinical side, Dr. Haleem has published extensively on various strategies of reconstruction of articular cartilage of the ankle and foot; including novel all-arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques, tissue regeneration utilizing cartilage cells and stem cell concentrates, as well as reconstructing navicular bone osteochondral lesions. He served as an expert on the International Consensus Meeting on Cartilage Repair of the Ankle, that put forth recommendations for treating osteochondral lesions/defects of the talus (also known as OCLs/OCDs). He has also published on salvage options of early ankle arthritis via distraction arthroplasty. His clinical publications also include flatfoot reconstruction and imaging, total ankle replacement and metatarsal lengthening. From an entire lower extremity perspective, Dr. Haleem has published on treating complex lower limb deformities, limb length discrepancies and salvaging lower limbs by treating complex infections.
Dr. Haleem's translational basic science research focuses on musculoskeletal tissue engineering and regenerations, particularly of articular cartilage and bone. He collaborates with biomedical tissue engineers investigating novel strategies to further enhance tissue healing. This includes the use of 3D-printed bioabsorbable scaffolds for articular cartilage regeneration in early ankle arthritis and segmental long bone defect reconstruction after trauma/fractures, with addition of ortho-biologics as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), platelet-rich-plasma (PRP), chondro-inductive peptides and different hydrogels. He also has specific interest in gait analyses of various foot and ankle pathologies in addition to the evaluation of foot models during dance movements in ballet dancers.
