Summer Internships for Undergraduate and Medical Students
2023 Summer Academy Program
We are pleased to announce the 2023 Summer Academy Program for undergraduate students studying biology, biomedical engineering, all pre-med and related fields. The program is open to medical students as well. This is an internship program to provide a diverse group of highly talented students to experience cutting edge research in an inclusive environment.
At the CEMS, research and education are tightly interwoven. Young physician- scientists and engineers who wish to devote their careers to developing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in educational fields are invited to apply. This is a great opportunity to conduct research at the CEMS under the direct supervision of our outstanding faculty.
Program is designed to provide highly talented students a chance to perform application oriented, cutting edge research while increasing their competitiveness for future education. Every intern is assigned to a post-doctoral fellow within the institute for supervision. Interns will also be expected to attend meetings and present their results at the end of internship. Opportunity to interact with other interns and scientists are available in research seminars, weekly meetings and scientific development workshops. Weekly journal club meetings will be conducted, where interns can prepare their talk on paper/topic of their interest under the supervision of fellows and give their presentations.
The CEMS focuses on a variety of research subjects including:
- Biopreservation and transplantation
- Organ-on-a-chip technologies
- Tissue engineering and stem cells
- Circulating rare cell capture technologies and cancer
- Global health
- Neuroscience
To apply, fill out the form by February 17, 2023.
Notes
- Some experience in laboratory techniques (Wet/ Dry Biology) is preferred but not required.
- At least 30 h per week for ≥10 weeks commitment is required.
- Applicants will be selected based on academic achievement and availability.
- If selected, applicants should be prepared for in person interviews during which prospective mentors meet with selected candidates, typically taking a half-day. Two recommendation letters are needed when the candidate is selected for in person interviews.
- Note that the positions are not funded but limited funding may be available.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Biopreservation Technologies
MGH Summer Academy is collaborating with ATP-Bio REU program to host a number of undergraduate students at MGH to work on ATP-Bio related projects.
ATP-Bio is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Center (ERC) co-led by the University of Minnesota and Massachusetts General Hospital with academic partnerships at the University of California-Berkeley and the University of California-Riverside. All engineering research in ATP-Bio is aimed at eliminating or mitigating the three enemies of biopreservation: ice formation, cryoprotective agent (CPA) toxicity, and slow and/or non-uniform rewarming. Undergraduate students are invited to join ATP-Bio researchers in a 10-week summer program to engage in an authentic laboratory experience with a focus on advancements in biopreservation technologies.
If you are currently enrolled in a 4-year university or community college and planning to major in a science discipline (engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or related fields) and are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its possessions, you are eligible to apply. NSF and ATP-Bio is particularly interested in increasing the numbers of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities in research. (Underrepresented minorities are African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders.) Students who are veterans of the U.S. Armed Services and first-generation college students, and those from institutions with few research opportunities are also strongly encouraged to apply.
