John Petrozza, MD
I am director of the Division of Reproductive Medicine and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) at Mass General, and I completed my fellowship training in 1996. Since then, I have dedicated myself to reproductive surgery with the primary goal of alleviating suffering from fibroids, endometriosis and pelvic adhesions. I have been involved over the years with the design, development and research into several surgical devices or techniques that have improved the lives of women with excessive uterine bleeding or fibroids. One of my visions when I came to Mass General in 2002 was to create a multidisciplinary program devoted to fibroids, which really started to gain steam in 2007 after many conversations with my colleagues in the Departments of Radiology and Obstetrics & Gynecology. The goal of this collaboration would be multifaceted, but would clearly address the need to educate our patients; provide clear, unbiased and scientifically sound information to help them make better decisions about their treatment; create public awareness about the social, medical and financial implications that fibroids have on patients and their families; provide a forum for researchers and clinicians to work together on research that brings new and better treatments to the clinical arena; and share our knowledge and experiences with our colleagues in the medical field.
As someone who works with patients struggling with infertility or pregnancy loss due to fibroids, I understand the suffering they are going through, but also appreciate the strength of their perseverance. My job is always to help them obtain a better uterus, whether it is by traditional or minimally invasive surgical techniques. For my patients desiring children, the greatest reward is when they come back to see me with a smile on their face and a child in their arms. For patients who no longer desire children, it is making sure they understand all their options and are comfortable moving forward with their plan of action.
I am indebted to the clinicians on this team who share this same vision, the researchers who work tirelessly to find a cause and a cure for this terrible disease and the patients who put their trust and faith in us every day. Learn more

Since my early years in interventional radiology, I have been very interested in the treatment of patients with fibroids because of its prevalence and how much it limits women's lives.
In 2008, I became actively involved in the care of fibroid patients and built a strong relationship with the OBGYN services at Mass General, leading to our research collaboration in this area.
I have seen many women improve their quality of life after appropriate treatments and, in most cases, observed how symptom control positively affected their lifestyle. I am very pleased to work in a multidisciplinary model in which women can make an informed decision about their treatment, reassured that we will offer the best option tailored to their needs. Most importantly, it is very rewarding to witness the impact of supporting women in being healthy again. Learn more

Physician Assistant, Interventional Radiology
It is an honor to be part of the Mass General Fibroid Program because of my interest in women's health and desire to improve quality of life through minimally invasive treatments. It is rewarding to be embraced by patients full of gratitude because they have gained control of their fibroids and no longer feel their fibroids are controlling their life. The multidisciplinary approach offers high-quality, convenient care where patients can be educated about their options, have their questions addressed by experts and make an informed decision about the best treatment for them. I am inspired by this group's communication, commitment to reviewing cases regularly, participation in monthly journal clubs and dedication to research. I look forward to the opportunity to care for our patients as a member of this incredible team.

I have been inspired by leaders within our field to focus on issues related to women's health, with a particular interest in patients with uterine fibroids.
