Learn more about our Inpatient APPs

Overview

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is comprised of nine specialty services: Children's Orthopedics, Hand & Arm, Hip & Knee Replacement, Foot & Ankle, Orthopedic Oncology, Orthopedic Trauma, Shoulder, Spine and Sports Medicine. For our complex surgical patients who require an inpatient hospital stay following orthopedic surgery, we have a team of 16 highly-skilled APPs who manage the care of our inpatient orthopedic population.

These APPs function as responding clinicians (RCs), which means they coordinate all aspects of care while patients are hospitalized. The RC role requires resilience and flexibility given the fast-paced work environment and the ever-changing demands of our current healthcare system.

As responding clinicians, our APPs are responsible for all aspects of patient care, which include the following:

  • admits patients who enter the hospital through the emergency room, from the clinic or by a scheduled admission
  • implements postop care and symptom management in accordance with surgeons’ treatment plans
  • provides patient/family education to reinforce the surgeons' postop plan; conducts patient/family meetings as necessary
  • diagnoses and treat new medical conditions during the patient's hospital stay
  • responds to patient events (shortness of breath, blood clots, irregular heartbeat, uncontrolled pain, etc) and treats accordingly
  • provides inpatient medical management for those orthopedic patients who do not require surgery
  • coordinates care with multiple providers who participate in overall treatment plans of the inpatient orthopedic population (nursing, infectious disease, plastic surgery, geriatics, general medicine, cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, urology, case management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition)
  • plans, communicates and documents all aspects of patient discharge to ensure a smooth and efficient transition of care to home, acute rehab, skilled nursing facility (SNF) or home hospital
