How to Volunteer

Help us make a world of difference by becoming a volunteer at Massachusetts General Hospital.

All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and must commit to at least 4 months of uninterrupted volunteer service.

High school students who are interested in volunteering at Mass General can learn more about our Junior Volunteer Program by calling (617) 726-8540.

Getting started:

  1. Register for volunteer orientation. After registering for orientation, you will receive a confirmation email.
  2. Complete an online application. A link to an online application is included in the orientation confirmation email, and must be submitted electronically prior to your orientation date. Attend an orientation, where you will schedule an interview with one of our staff.
  3. If you are accepted into the volunteer program, you will:
    • Complete a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) for a background check
    • Submit the medical requirements for volunteering
    • Review descriptions of available volunteer service opportunities
    • Discuss each placement area training and on-boarding procedures
    • Determine your assignment

These procedures are designed to ensure a safe and healthy environment for patients, family and staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Volunteer Department at 617-726-8540.

Volunteers Needed in Waltham

There is a special need for volunteers at our facility in Waltham. Patients can feel vulnerable or confused when they are on their way to a doctor’s appointment. Seeing a friendly and welcoming face when they arrive in Waltham could provide great comfort to them. Volunteers may assist by escorting patients to the correct suite, or by providing them with a snack during their appointment.
