IAEA Meeting on Safety Culture in Radiation Uses in Medicine

October 1-3, 2018, Vienna, Austria
Dr. Rehani was invited to chair the IAEA Meeting on Safety Culture in Radiation Uses in Medicine. The meeting had participants from 14 countries and representatives from various organizations such as the World Health Organization as well as societies of radiology, medical physics, nuclear medicine, radiological technologists and regulators.

The meeting clarified the difference between radiation safety and radiation safety culture and identified actions that can enhance safety culture. Participants noted that there are significant training materials available from various sources and that there should be an emphasis on results. While the focus in the nuclear and aviation industries is on avoidance of accidents because the consequences are fatal, the medical field must focus on events with minor, moderate, high and very high significance including fatal significance. Attention to this wide range of events determines safety culture.
