How Can I Support My Teen After a Diabetes Diagnosis?

There are many ways you can support your teen after a diabetes diagnosis. How you support your teen is different from how you support a child. Teens are learning a new sense of independence.

Here are different ways you can help:

  • Understand where your child is coming from when they express their feelings, fears or experiences.
  • Provide your teen with choices. This allows for a sense of independence.
  • Talk about expectations together. Share what you expect your teen to do in terms of managing his diabetes. Encourage your teen to share his expectations of himself and of you as well.
  • Share your teen’s concerns and your own concerns with the care team.
