About Michael Lev, MD

I have been an attending neuroradiologist at MGH since 1995 and am board certified in both Internal Medicine and Radiology, with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuroradiology.

I served as Deputy Editor for neuroimaging of the journal Radiology (the flagship journal of the Radiological Society of North America) from August 2007 through March 2009, for which I continue to be a special consultant Deputy Editor, and have been on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR) since 2000.

I am an elected Fellow of both the American Heart Association (FAHA) and American College of Radiology (FACR).

I have been Co-Principal Investigator with Dr. Bonmassar for both the NBIB funded University of Cincinnati “point-of-care” center grant and the more recent DOD funded CIMIT grant (Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology), studying the clinical feasibility of Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) for the rapid, portable detection and monitoring of acute brain injury. Most recently, I continue as an imaging co-investigator for the DOD funded “Low-level light therapy (LLLT) for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)” clinical trial, and have been a Co-Investigator for the NIH funded U01 project developing MRI/CT compatible deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes.

Research

The unifying theme of my academic efforts has been the advancement and dissemination of novel methods for imaging brain structure and function in general – and the neurovascular system in particular – through both clinical excellence and translation research, as well as teaching at the local, national, and international levels. I have been recognized as a leader in developing, defining, and communicating the roles of innovative physiological imaging techniques in the management of diverse, clinically important neurological disorders including stroke, cancer, and traumatic brain injury.

Stroke imaging, CTA/CTP:

My efforts to establish CT angiography (CTA) and perfusion (CTP) imaging as convenient, low cost alternatives to MRI have significantly influenced the triage of stroke and brain tumor patients worldwide.  Indeed, many of my high-impact publications of the past 15 years – some highlighted by journal editorials and the lay press - have pioneered the emergency use of CT/CTA/CTP in patient selection for thrombolytic stroke therapies, potentially shifted the accepted paradigm regarding the optimal metric for determining admission infarct size using CTP, and set the agenda for imaging studies of brain tumor angiogenesis, staging, and outcome prediction.

Technical development of novel imaging modalities and optimization of advanced neuro-imaging techniques.

General clinical Emergency and Emergency Neuroimaging, population health, and workflow issues: including machine learning and "big data-mining" techniques as applied to these areas.

Bioengineering: including Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) electrode development.

Publications
