About Marcelo Matiello, MD
Dr. Marcelo Matiello is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and a member of the division of neuro-immunology and of comprehensive neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Matiello is the Director of Inpatient Services at Mass General and the Director of Teleneurology program. He is the Associate Director of the Neuromyelitis Optica clinic and research unit
Dr. Matiello completed his Doctorate of Medicine at University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he also completed four year residency training in Neurology and Internal Medicine. He joined the Mayo Clinic from 2006-2012, completed two research fellowships in genetics and molecular mechanisms of Multiple Sclerosis and NMO and became a Research Associate of the Department of Neurology. At the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine, he obtained his Master of Science. In 2012, he went to Yale University, where he spent one year on Internal Medicine residency training. In 2016 he completed his Neurology residency at the Harvard Medical School, within the Mass General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Matiello has authored over 40 book chapters and peer-reviewed manuscripts in high-impact journals such as Neurology, Neurology Clinical Practice,NeuroHospitalist, Annals of Neurology, JAMA, Muscle & Nerve, Multiple Sclerosis, Journal of Neuroimmunology.
Dr. Matiello is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association and of Scientific Consortium of the Guthy Jackson Foundation for NMO. Dr. Matiello is a world-renowned educator in central nervous system diseases, inpatient neurology, telehealth and therapeutic plasma exchange. He has presented his work in 20 countries. He has been awarded with the prestigious Mayo Clinic Neurology Research Award (2010), the European Committee for Multiple Sclerosis Best research award (2012), Yale Hospital Outstanding Physician Award (2013), the Harvard Education Scholar (2015) and the MGH child neurology award (2016), Mass General Bowditch Award (2019). He has been selected for the American Academy of Neurology Diversity Leadership Program. His research has been funded by the AAN, National MS Society, MS International Federation, Mass General Center for Diversity and Inclusion and Sumaira Foundation. Dr. Matiello speaks three languages.
