About this Program

Each member of our Mass General sleep division group cares for patients over the full spectrum of sleep disorders. It is the mission of our sleep laboratory to provide the highest level of diagnostic and therapeutic services for sleep apnea, insomnia and other sleep disorders. Our active ambulatory clinic provides consultation and chronic care for patients with a spectrum of sleep disorders. The division also hosts cutting edge clinical research in several areas including sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome and beyond.

Patients seeking our services suffer from a variety of sleep disorders, including:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Snoring
  • Insomnia
  • Narcolepsy
  • Parasomnia (e.g. acting out dreams)
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Circadian disorders

Patients who suspect they might have a sleep disorder should speak with their primary care physician, who might want to order a sleep study (see below) and/or a consultation from our staff of sleep experts.

The Division of Sleep Medicine's sleep laboratory features an eight-bed diagnostic center for testing outpatients. For comfort and convenience, it is located at the Wyndham Hotel, immediately next to Mass General. As we tell our patients, coming to the sleep lab is similar to checking in to a hotel.

This state-of-the-art facility allows us to safely and efficiently administer overnight testing in the form of sleep study called a polysomnogram. We also perform daytime testing, including the multiple sleep latency test, or MSLT, as well as mask fitting and desensitization. All of our facilities are wheelchair-accessible. We can accommodate children age 13 and above for overnight testing.

Referrals

Primary care physicians and specialists can refer patients by calling 617-724-7426.

For a sleep study, we require a completed Sleep Study Requisition form (PDF). Please print, complete and fax to 617-724-6513.

For referring MDs, we require the following to be submitted with the requisition:

  • Recent clinic note, typed (please note, hand written records are not accepted)
  • All prior sleep study reports (include home sleep tests)
  • CPAP compliance report, if applicable
  • Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)

For Providers

Prior Authorization for Sleep Lab Testing

We are pleased to announce that we are now able to help physicians obtain prior authorization for in-lab clinical sleep studies at the Mass General (Wyndham) sleep laboratory.

How it Works

Participation is simple: just order the polysomnography (PSG) in Epic, and we’ll use your clinic notes to perform the Prior Authorization service. The more information you place in your clinic note, the more likely we are to get the PSG approved without needing you to perform a peer-to-peer call.

What happens after you order the test

The Mass General Sleep Lab will work directly with your patient to schedule their PSG.

Scheduling triggers our staff to apply for prior authorization if the patient’s insurance requires one.

If our request is denied (or if it approved for home sleep testing instead) our Finance Coordinator will reach out to you. At that point, you can either decide to pursue home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) or you can pursue a peer-to-peer phone call to appeal. If you already know you want to appeal if PSG is denied (or that you would allow HSAT), you can indicate that at the time of Epic ordering (in free text).
