Caring for Women in Boston and Around the World
The Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology Global Health Program is an integral part of our departmental mission.
We address the unmet promise of health care for all women throughout the world, through patient care, education and research innovation. We strive to ensure that our efforts are guided by the locally relevant needs of our partners and the women they serve.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a long-standing commitment to women's health.
The Vincent Memorial Hospital, dedicated to the care of sick and impoverished women, was founded in 1891 and later became Mass General’s gynecology service. The continuing collaboration between the OB/GYN Department and the Vincent Memorial Hospital helps sustain our research and education mission.

Chief, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology
A Vision for the Future
Jeffrey Ecker, MD, appointed chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2015, has made women's health care his life's work. A member of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty at Mass General for more than 18 years and professor of Obstetrics Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Ecker’s academic interests are in understanding and optimizing pregnancy outcomes often as part of collaborative research efforts. In addition, Dr. Ecker has studied and written widely about issues in reproductive ethics including appropriate limits to conscientious objection in reproductive medicine and the legal and moral challenges to maternal autonomy during pregnancy.
Dr. Ecker’s clinical and academic work is reflected in local and national leadership roles. He was a founding member of the Massachusetts Perinatal Quality Collaborative and is past-president of the Obstetric Society of Boston. He has served as chair of the Committee on Ethics for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and has been a member of the ethics committees of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.
